Getting ready to set some fence posts in the corral and wondering how much cement you'll need? Today, in part I of our series on fences, you'll learn to set fence posts the cowboy way. Most fence posts don't need cement at all. While the West was won with barbed wire and fence posts, it was done without concrete. Cowboys and ranchers didn't have cement, so they just set posts in the hole, added dirt 3 to 4 inches at a time, and packed it down real well -- until the hole was full and the post secure. Works well today, too. You might want to add some cement for posts where a gate hangs off or at corners. That's OK, but you don't have to mix it up with water. Just pour it in around the post dry, and let Mother Nature do the rest. And that's the On The House tip for today.
