Let There Be (Candle) Light

When a stormy blackout occurs at night, you won't always have emergency light. You could be without a lantern, flashlight or even a candle. When this happens, here are some ways to put things right. If you only have a simple birthday candle, you still can make it burn big and bright by pushing it into a jar of petroleum jelly. Make sure just the tip is sticking out; then light it and it will burn for hours. You can also make a long-burning light by pouring cooking oil into a glass measuring cup and suspending a short string in the center as a wick. For safety, set the cup in a shallow metal pan, light it and the floating string?s tip will burn for hours. We'll have more emergency tips tomorrow. And that's the On The House tip for today.
