Today kicks off National Fitness Month (sponsored by the president's council on physical fitness and sports). Today we're all more health-conscious, trying to keep fit and watching our diets. But ?well being? also means taking a look at environmental hazards in our homes, such as lead which is especially dangerous to small children. If you live in an older home (built before 1978), lead paint is a potential danger when it peels, chips or is sanded. And, paint isn't the only danger; tap water can be another source of lead poisoning, as soil can be if you live near heavily traveled roads. Even some window blinds can be dangerous. If they're vinyl, non-glossy and were made in China, Taiwan, Indonesia or Mexico, they might have a high lead content. Inexpensive test kits for the presence of lead are sold at hardware stores. Free guidelines are also available from the Environmental Protection Agency. And that's the On The House tip for today.
