Protect Plants From Frost

You worked hard this year, and your landscaping looks great. But Jack Frost soon will be here to turn your greenery brown, and Old Man Winter will be right behind him to strip those leaves and weight things down. You don't have to let this winter duo do you in. We've got tips to help you win. Unlike freezing, which comes from everywhere, frost starts high and travels downward, making it easy for you to protect fragile plants, trees and shrubs. With an umbrella made of light netting or burlap, drive in four stakes that are taller than your plant, and drape the material, leaving an air space at the bottom for it to breathe. If a tree or shrub is too large for an umbrella, spray on a moisture-retaining product, because, when dry, they damage easily. A layer of mulch around the base also helps to hold in heat and warmth. Wrapping tree trunks with burlap helps, too. Cover and bundle up your greenery this winter and your home will be a neighborhood showplace next spring. And that's the On The House tip for today.
