If the cost of heating and cooling your home seems expensive, it's time to do a little investigating to see if air infiltration is robbing you blind. Outside air often sneaks into your home around and through electric-plug outlets and faceplates of electrical switches. This, in turn, makes your furnace or air conditioner work harder to heat and/or cool your home. To stop this costly energy theft, you need a screwdriver, an hour or two of your time and a few packs of plug and switch gaskets to seal off that costly air infiltration. These gaskets are a thin layer of sponge-type material. They cost only about 25 cents each and usually are sold in packs. To find where they're needed, hold a lighted candle near the faceplate. If the flame flickers, turn off the electricity and remove the cover with your screwdriver. Install the gasket and replace the cover. Do this all around your house and you've taken a big bite out of energy crime, in no time at all. And that's the On The House tip for today.
