If you get a hole in the middle of your vinyl floor or it wears out from heavy traffic, don't fret. Often you can avoid replacing the entire floor by making repairs with a patch. You have no scraps from the original installation to make a repair and your flooring has been discontinued? Try looking under the refrigerator or under the stove or even under your cabinets. Usually you can find enough material to handle your repair. When you do, cut out the damaged area with a sharp knife, on a pattern line if possible. Then use the cutout to make a pattern for the new patch, and glue it in. Tub-and-tile caulk works great as an adhesive. When the glue dries, seal the joint around the patch with a clear seam sealer from any flooring store. This technique works only on vinyl sheet goods and is not recommended for asbestos or other brittle flooring. And that's the On The House tip for today.
