Cleaning - Better Safe Than Sorry

If you were to find a mystery bottle under your sink, who would know what might be inside? It could be a strong cleaner or a flammable -- or even something toxic or reactive. Mixed with another product from under the sink, like some cleaners and bleach, it could create deadly chlorine gas. For a homespun safe cleaner for windows, put 3 tablespoons of ammonia, 1 tablespoon of white vinegar and ? cup of water in a spray bottle and spritz. A neat idea for polishing brass: use Worcestershire sauce. Clean copper with a vinegar-and-salt solution and, finally, soak silver in a quart of warm water with a teaspoon of baking soda, a teaspoon of salt with a piece of aluminum foil in it. These homemade cleaners are super safe. We've gotten used to many product brand names that we forget can be hazardous or even deadly. So perhaps kinder, gentler cleaners are in order. Better safe than sorry. And that's the On The House tip for today.
