We're here in Lillehammer Veesboden Sarayevo, Germany, for the opening ceremonies in the men's downhill wood-staining freestyle. Today, lots of competitors are trying to evenly coat their wood with an oil-base stain. Not an easy task, especially when you've got hard and soft spots in your grain. Here's our first competitor from Norway. Lots of wood to practice on there. Here he goes -- nice even strokes, another dip, and he blotches on the second pass. Too bad. Now, here's our second competitor. He's from the USA. He's off to a nice start, using great technique. To get a more even appearance and avoid blotching out, he's using a clear or natural coat first that soaks into the softer, more porous grain. This allows him to evenly spread his next coat of oil-base stain without uneven blotching. It's the sign of a pro. Look how smooth that oil-base stain looks. It's a winner. He's making a run for the gold. And that's the On The House tip for today.
