When you moved into your home, your lighted fluorescent ceiling was all sparkling bright, shiny and new. But over the years, its luster has dimmed. It now flickers and hums with a bulb or two out, and inside the panels there are little black dots where insects have crashed and burned. Here's what you can do to clean up your act and shed light on your room. First remove and wash the plastic lenses. Then replace each bulb -- working, or not. Most use standard 48-inch fixtures with bulbs that cost only a few dollars each. If some still flicker, or won't light at all, replace the ballast for about $10. You'll end up with a brighter, more energy-efficient room. And that's the On The House tip for today.
