Creating a Backyard Tropical Paradise

Is it your fantasy to live in a tropical paradise? Here's how to create a little fantasy-island adventure right in your own backyard. Start with a simple water-garden pond with a shallow depth of 2 feet or less. It can range from only a few feet square, up to swimming pool size -- or more. Once excavated, line the pool with heavy waterproof vinyl. Or you can use a prefabricated plastic pool. Then go with rocks, trees and foliage -- creating your own tropical-island look. Add a waterfall or underwater lights, and color lights to accent landscaping. A circulating pump and filtration system will keep water clean and mosquito-free. Adding a few fish will help too. Finally, add some water plants for character and to keep pond water fresh and clear. And that's the On The House tip for today.
