Opening Windows that Are Painted Shut

There's nothing more frustrating than a beautiful day and a wood window that's totally and firmly painted shut. This condition keeps you from bringing all that wonderful fresh air inside. Here are three steps that'll let you breathe easy. If too much paint has sealed the joint between the window frame -- called the sash -- and the stop or wood trim that frames the sash, use a sharp knife to cut the paint between the sash and stop. Several passes might be needed to cut completely through. If it won't budge, tap a wide-blade putty knife into the crack with a hammer on both sides of the sash. If it still won't move, put a pry bar under one corner of the sash and push down to free one side. Then do the same on the other corner. Repeat this process, alternating sides until your window is completely free. And that's the On The House tip for today.
