Repair Rotted Wood Frames

In remodeling, window replacement is big business. This year, 4 million homes will get millions of dollars worth of new windows, but not every one of these homes actually needs them. Many just have rotted wood frames and sills that homeowners can easily repair themselves. All you need is a two-phase, two-part epoxy repair kit from your local hardware store or home center. First, scoop out any soft, rotted wood and mix up the two-part liquid in phase one. Apply it to the rotted area as a weather seal and bonding agent. Next, use the two-part putty in phase two to fill in the hole. When dry, it can be planed or sanded just like wood. Then use an oil primer and an oil or latex finish coat to make your frame look good as new. Pick up the phone and call your travel agent or stockbroker. Bet you can think of lots to do with the thousands of dollars you didn't spend on new windows. Just remember to send us a post card. And that's the On The House tip for today.
