Unfortunately there are burglars out there, and if you're not careful you might be inviting them in. There are three types. First are your basic 101 garden-variety amateurs. Not very sophisticated, they usually perform crimes of opportunity, which is anything they stumble across that catches their attention -- like unlocked doors and open windows. Amateurs usually are the easiest to discourage. Just use common sense. Then there are the semi-professionals -- the weekend warriors who do a job here and there. They know what to look for and have more tricks up their sleeves. Finally, there's America's most wanted -- the true-blue professional burglar. He's crafty, sneaky and smart, and often will spend as much as a week casing a new neighborhood. You'll probably never have to deal with a pro or even a semi-pro, but you probably can avoid all three with extra security and extra care. Make sure doors and windows are locked and add motion-detector outdoor lighting. Your home is vulnerable when you're gone -- for a few days or a few minutes. Don't let mail and papers pile up outside, leave a light on at night and don't leave a key under the mat. Maybe even get a dog to take a bite out of crime. And that's the On The House tip for today.
