The coffee can is probably the world's most versatile device. Once relieved of its original cargo, it can be used to mix paint, store screws, nails, and nuts and bolts, not to mention that it is a great container for storing Sunday morning's left-over bacon fat. Well, the Carey Brothers have come up with another interesting use for the celebrated 1-pound coffee can. Be sure to save the plastic top -- you will need it, as well. Actually, the top is the key to the success of this project. Place the top, upside down, on a piece of scrap wood and use an 8th-inch round steel dowel or a similar size piece of metal tubing to cut a series of holes into the soft plastic. The holes should be staggered and spaced at a distance equal to their diameter. Fill the can with fertilizer, bird seed or lawn seed, place the cover onto the can and begin spreading. You can even use your new-found spreader for bubble-bath powder. And that's the On The House tip for today.
