How To Replace a Piece of Cracked Tile

Ceramic tile is an attractive and durable finish for counters, walls and floors. However, a chipped or cracked tile can be unsightly and might even be the cause of underlying damage. Replacing a damaged tile isn't as complex as one would think. In fact, with the proper tools, it's a task that can be accomplished in short order. Finding a matching tile is often the greatest challenge. If an exact match can't be found, consider the options. Decorative tiles with interesting patterns, textures or colors can be used as a design element that will add interest to an otherwise drab affair. The most effective way to remove the damaged tile is to drill a small hole in its center and use a glass cutter to score the surface from corner to corner in both directions. Use a small hammer and chisel to chip away the tile and create a smooth and clean opening for the replacement. A generous amount of latex caulk in the opening and on the back side of the tile will ensure a strong bond. Finish the job with a touch of grout. And that's the On The House tip for today.
