Use Caution When Disposing of Toxics

If you like to change your own oil, make sure it goes into an appropriate container and is disposed of properly. Every year, Americans dump 350 million gallons of used motor oil into storm drains that flow into creeks and rivers. That's 30 times the amount spilled in the Exxon Valdez disaster. Many people don't realize that storm drains lead directly to local waterways such as creeks, rivers and tributaries. Unlike the waste that runs down your kitchen sink, stormwater, and everything it picks up along the way, goes directly to local waterways with no treatment whatsoever. So the next time you're ready to dispose of oil, old paint or pesticides, give the folks at your local waste management company a call for advice on proper disposal. And that's the On The House tip for today.
