If the water pressure in your 30-plus year old home isn't what it once was, chances are your galvanized pipe is clogged with mineral buildup and corrosion. Solve the problem by replacing the galvanized pipe with copper. While not immune to corrosion, copper will last significantly longer and is simple to install. All you'll need is a tube cutter, emery cloth, flux, a flux brush, solder and a propane torch. Cut the pipe to the desired length, polish the end of the pipe and the inside of the fitting with emery cloth until bright. Apply a thin layer of flux to the polished areas and push the parts together. Finally, use the torch to heat the fitting (not the pipe) until the flux bubbles. Then touch solder to the joint. Capillary action pulls solder into the joint forming a uniform bead. And that's the On The House tip for today.
