Show Notes for July 25, 2009
This week’s installment of the radio show featured all the tips, tricks and do-it-yourself advice you can only get at On The House. We shared ways to use everyday products for other uses around the home. For instance, did you know vinegar can be used to freshen laundry and clean carpets? We also had information on a pesky critter that seems to be a nuisance for a lot of people…moles. Read on to find out what you can do to deter and get rid of them for good.
Moles are considered to be agricultural pests in some countries, while in others, such as Germany, they are a protected species.
Moles burrow lawns, raising molehills, and killing the lawn. They can undermine plant roots, indirectly causing damage or death. However, contrary to popular belief, moles do not eat plant roots.
Rebecca’s Recipe:
• 1 cup Murphy’s Oil Soap, 1 ounce caster oil, ¼ cup cayenne pepper, mix this together with 2 parts water in a garden spray bottle, and use the spray wherever there is a hole you believe is from a mole, or other underground creature.
Morris’ website Suggestion:
• Dr. T's Whole Control - 32 oz Sprayette
• Hose-in mole control. Inhibits the formation of burrows, tunnels, ridges and holes caused by burrowing animals. Lasts up to 3 months no matter what the weather.
Past Listener Suggestions:
• A electronic device that sends out sound waves can deter moles
• Chewing gum
• Cat Litter
• Blood Meal
• Flooding or smoking the mole’s burrow
• Installing a windmill, a child’s play windmill or other more decorative, this causes the ground to move slightly, just enough to bother the moles underground.
6 Smart Uses for Vinegar
1. Clean Windows
Mix 2 tablespoons of white vinegar with a gallon of water, and dispense into a used spray bottle. Squirt on, then scrub with newspaper, not paper towels, which cause streaking.
2. Get Spring Fresh Laundry
Make a mixture of one-third cup white vinegar and two-thirds cup water. Apply the solution to the stain and blot with a clean cloth. Repeat this process until you've removed as much green as possible, and then launder as usual.
3. Clean Carpets
Spots in carpets often remove with a simple dilution of one part vinegar, one-sixteenth part lemon juice and eight parts distilled water.
4. Wash Produce
Mix three parts water to one part white vinegar, and dispense in a spray bottle. Then rinse with water. The wash kills 98% of bacteria on produce.
5. Break Bad Bonds
Vinegar can be used as a solvent to dissolve many common adhesives. Vinegar is also good at cutting grease.
6. Fight Hiccups and Cramps
Mix 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar, 1 teaspoon of honey and a cup of hot water. Then drink before bed.
8 Smart Uses for Olive Oil
1. Ease snoring
Taking a sip of olive oil before heading to bed can help lubricate your throat muscles, cutting down on snoring.
2. Cure an earache
A number of folks swear by olive oil as a natural remedy for earaches. One suggestion is to "very carefully use a cotton swab to apply olive oil to the outside ear cavity to help with earaches and excess wax."
3. Tame tangled and damaged hair
Olive oil also has benefits for hair. Comb a bit of the stuff through dry or frizzy hair to help tame and moisturize your locks, especially in winter or on humid days.
Olive oil can also provide some relief for damaged hair.
4. Get healthy skin (and fight cancer!)
People have used olive oil for centuries for personal care. It is a great skin moisturizer, in part because it contains linoleic acid, a compound not made by the body, but which prevents water from evaporating. You can also add a bit of olive oil to a warm bath for a good healthy soak.
5. Care for your cat
add a teaspoon of olive oil to your cat’s food to help prevent hairballs, as well as promote a shiny, healthy coat. Olive oil is likely to be more gentle on a cat's system than petroleum-based anti-hairball lubricants.
6. Free stuck zippers
Swab some of the stuff on the teeth of the zipper, then try gently easing it unstuck.
7. Polish furniture and metal (and condition leather)
Silverware, copper, and other metal items can be polished with ketchup or toothpaste. After you're done rub a bit of olive oil on to prevent streaks, corrosion, and tarnish.
You can also condition and revitalize leather goods, such as baseball mitts, by rubbing in olive oil. Let set for 30 minutes, then wipe away any excess.
8. Fix squeaky doors
Olive oil can be used as a lubricant in many applications. It's safe to keep around the house, so you don’t have to worry about children or pets getting into it. Try it out on squeaky doors, hinges, and anywhere else you might consider using WD-40 or another lubricant.
