Plant Bulblings in Your Spring Garden

Spring is here and that means it's time to garden!

Jealous of your neighbor's blooming daffodils because you forgot to plant bulbs last fall? Or, do you have some bare spots in your garden that need a little extra color?

You're in luck. Nursery grown bulbs, known as bulblings or bulblettes create a colorful spring border almost immediately and are available in almost any garden center. These little spring beauties have taken the American gardening market by storm and are easy to grow.

Just follow a few simple steps:

• Make sure soil is crumbly and full of rich, organic matter prior to planting.

• Buy potted bulb plants when the stems are short and the buds are formed.

• If plants have not been acclimated to the outdoors yet, place them in a protected but unheated spot for a day or two before planting.

• Prior to planting, water pots well and allow them to drain.

• Plant in large sweeping, flowing patterns -- not in straight lines.
Use a large number of one specimen in one color. Large blocks of one color capture the eye and make a bold statement.

• Intersperse with early spring flowering perennials.

• Lightly water after planting.
