Designing a Home Office

Whether you’re an aspiring novelist, the family bookkeeper or a stay at home CEO, designing a home office isn’t just a matter of turning your extra bedroom into a work area

Here are the basic pieces virtually every home office needs:

GOOD LIGHTING is key. Make sure the space has plenty of natural light if you work by day. A task light or two on your desk facing down over your workspace will provide direct lighting, You don’t want bright, direct light on your computer screen because it will cause glare.

GET A COMFY CHAIR that supports your lower back and fits your body. Adjust the height so that your feet are flat on the floor and your thighs are parallel with the floor. And your forearms and your hands should stay roughly parallel to the floor when you’re working.

The top of your computer monitor should be at or just below eye level, at least 20 inches from your eyes. If your monitor is small, or you’re using a laptop, put it on a computer stand or a shelf. It’s best if you’re looking directly at the monitor, but if you work primarily with real paper on your desk, position the monitor so you just have to turn your head slightly to the side.

NEXT YOU’LL NEED STORAGE. There are lots of inexpensive file cabinets and shelving that will fit in any size or style room. Label everything so you don’t waste time looking for things.

FINALLY, don’t forget about color and decorative touches. Your office should reflect your style and taste, and if you need a little incentive to work keep in mind the red is invigorating, green encourages growth and orange inspires creativity.
