Cut or break off the tough bottoms of the spears. Cut spears into 2-inch pieces. Drop into a pot of boiling water and simmer 2 minutes, or just until tender. Do not overcook. Drain and rinse immediately under cold running water until the asparagus are cool. Drain well. Place asparagus in a bowl and add the soy sauce, sugar and oil. Mix well. Serve on a bed of lettuce.
