Tasty Exotic Fruit - Yuzu

Have you ever heard of yuzu?

It’s one of my favorite citruses. It's truly delicious and one of the hottest fruits for 2010.

The yuzu is a citrus fruit native to East Asia. It looks like a small grapefruit with an uneven skin, and can be either be yellow or green (depending on the degree of ripeness.)

The yuzu flavor is tart, resembling that of a grapefruit, but it has overtones of mandarin orange. Its prized for its juice and aromatic zest, and is commonly used in place of lemon or lime in Asian dishes.

In Asia, the fruit is thinly sliced and combined with sugar and honey to make a thick, marmalade-like syrup. A tablespoon of this syrup is stirred into a cup of hot water, and is said to be the perfect remedy for the common cold.

I use yuzu in salad dressings and sauces. You can find the juice, and the fruit itself, in Asian markets across the country.
