Child Safety

In a recent column on safety, you forgot to mention a major safety hazard in homes. Window covering cords pose a serious danger to children in terms of possible strangulation.
My son, Ruben, was napping one afternoon. When I went to check on him, I found his head hanging from a cord which was one foot from his crib. Had I been aware of this potential hazard Ruben would be alive today.
I went through medical school, including a pediatrics rotation. I have had a mothers' group and we have discussed child safety issues. Yet, despite my background and desire to protect my child from danger, I was struck by a hazard that was in my own home.
The National Safety Council is aware of this hazard, but I would like to see more publicity in newspapers, magazines and at pediatricians' offices.
