Lighten the Room

We purchased an older home that has an "add-on". They did the whole room in dark wood paneling. The room is about 10'x 20' with dark-brown carpet and a white ceiling. I need more light in this room. What can I do to the wood paneling to make more light? I'd like to paint it white and maybe change the rug. By the way, the room has two windows, one is under cover from the front porch and the other has a Monterey pine in front of it.

There are a number of things that we might suggest to improve the natural light into this dismal room. First, get rid of that dark-brown carpet and go with something more neutral. You'll be amazed by the affect this has on the overall picture. Second, if the paneling you mention is real wood, we strongly suggest that you sand down the finish, use a wood bleach, and apply a lighter finish. If you are tired of the stained finish, a fresh coat of light paint will do the trick. Next, a little tree trimming is in order. Cutting back that overgrown landscaping also will help let some precious light in. Last, but certainly not least, you may wish to consider a skylight or two. With the proper roof configuration and the right exposure, a skylight can be a real winner.
