What Type of Vacuume to Buy?

I’ve installed a new hardwood floor and was thinking about getting one of those automated “robot” vacuums that clean around the house on their own. Is there a particular model I should get?
Ron, Reno NV

These high-tech vacuums that used to cost as much as two-thousand dollars are now in the three- or four-hundred dollar price range. And we have heard from several of our radio program listeners that they do in fact work pretty well. Sorry, but we can’t recommend a specific brand or model. Remember that all vacuums – self propelled or not – even those with HEPA filters – have a tendency to move dust around the house as they go. Our favorite system isn’t as easy as the self propelled units. We are actually partial to central vacuum systems. With this type of system dust collection occurs outside the home (usually in the garage or an out building). This passes all dust vacuumed from within your home through an air tight line to a collection unit outside. When this is the case, who cares whether the tank leaks – it’s outside! By the way, if you have allergies a central system is a must.
