Q & A

Sizing a Drill Bit

Question?

I’m installing a metal bracket on a 4x4 post, and I have the 3/8” lead bolt I want to use but can’t find a chart that will tell me what size hole to drill. How do I figure this out?

Henry, York PA

Answer!

Use a bit that is no more than a sixteenth of an inch larger than the outside diameter of your lead anchor. Also, make sure that the hole is more than deep enough to accept the full length of the anchor. With the hole drilled – and cleaned out – tap the lead anchor into the place. You can immediately install the bolt.
