Stain Deck Spindles

Question?

My husband and I built a deck a few years ago and we’re going to begin staining soon. What’s the easiest way to stain the spindles?

Cheryl, Wisconsin

Answer!

Cleaning, the first step in the process, can be easily accomplished by applying a deck brightening product. Rinse the cleaner off with a pressure washer. The end result will be better than what can be achieved with a garden hose rinse. While the cleaned surface dries go to a paint supply store and look in the same aisle where they have the rollers and paint pads. Look for a painting mitt. These are similar to the mitts used to clean cars, but the fibers are finer. When doing the deck spindles, lightly dip the mitt into the stain solution and work it around the circumference of the spindle from top-to-bottom. Have a rag nearby to wipe off any excess, as a thick coat of stain will become gummy and sticky.
