Formula for Clean Wood

Question?

Please send the formula of linseed oil/turpentine/hot water for refinishing wood.

Pedro

Answer!

The ingredients that you refer to (in proper combination) are used for cleaning and restoring the original luster to fine wood furniture. Eugena Chapman, mother of 11 and grandmother of 25, a professional housekeeper and the co-author of "Clean Your House & Everything in It" recommends the following formula:

Blend 2 tablespoons of linseed oil and 2 tablespoons of turpentine together with 1 quart of boiling water. Wearing rubber gloves, dip a rag in the cleaner and wring it out until it is barely damp. Wash one area of the wood at a time, such as one side of an end table. Wipe it dry immediately, then go on to the next area.

Chapman cautions that doing too large an area at once could possibly damage the wood. The water portion of the concoction may cause the grain of the wood to raise. Repeat the process as many times as it takes to get the wood clean.

When the solution cools the oil and turpentine will separate from the water. Don't reheat it. When this happens throw the cleaner out and start with a new batch.

Remember, this formula is for fine wood furniture, cabinetry or paneling. Wood which is varnished or shellacked can be cleaned more effectively with Murphy's Oil Soap.
