Do It Yourself Alarm Systems

Question?

Is it practical for homeowners to install their home security system? I've been to this new security store and they seem to sell most of the security systems that I've had alarm salesmen show me. Obviously I can save a lot by installing a system myself, but is it worth the hassle? Can a non-technical person properly install these systems?

Peggy

Answer!

Your question can be applied to virtually any phase of home improvement. "Is this something that I can do myself or will I get in over my head?" Needless to say, a penny saved is a penny earned. But you don't want to be penny wise and pound foolish when it comes to talking home security.

Yes, you can successfully install your own home security system, but there are some considerations.

You will find that a wireless system is considerably less difficult to install than a hard-wired system. In fact, alarm companies tell us that, in most cases, the single most difficult part of installing a security system is running the wires. This can be especially difficult, depending on the layout and construction of the home. Special tools and equipment also will be required, and this could complicate matters.

And, some security systems include the use of pressure-sensitive mats that require the removal and replacement of carpet. This in itself can be a real stumbling block for the "do-it-yourselfer."

If you are a patient, mechanically oriented person who doesn't mind getting their hands dirty, than you may want to attempt to install it yourself.

Whether it is worth the hassle can only be determined by answering three basic questions: 1) Will I derive personal satisfaction in doing this myself? 2) Is this something that I can accomplish in a reasonable time frame? 3) How much do I really stand to save once I consider the investment of my time and energy?

Most alarm companies will give you a fair idea of what the labor portion of the total package is. This should help you in making your decision.
