Tip of the Day On The House with the Carey Bros.

Emergency Candlelight

You can make a long-burning light by pouring cooking oil into a glass measuring cup and suspending a short string in the center for a wick.

When a storm causes a blackout at night, you won’t always have emergency light. You could be without a lantern, working flashlight or even a candle. When this happens, here are a couple of emergency measures to take. If all you have is a simple birthday candle, you can make it burn big and bright by pushing it into a jar of petroleum jelly with just the tip sticking out. Light it and it’ll burn for hours. You can also make a long-burning light by pouring cooking oil into a glass measuring cup and suspending a short string in the center for a wick. For safety, set the cup in a shallow metal pan and light it. The floating string’s tip will burn for hours. And that's the On The House tip for today.
