Street Treat

How dogs on New York streets are getting treats.

Today officially kicks off a pet double header — National Pet Week and Be Kind to Animals Week. Dogs on New York streets now are getting special treats. We've all seen candy vending machines in lobbies, waiting areas and stores. They dispense tempting goodies. All that is needed is a coin and a twist of the wrist. But in New York City, such treats are no longer an option for people only. New, specialized vending machines called Street Treats have sprung up on street corners around town. For a quarter — as with some candy machines — they dispense a special beef liver treat for your favorite canine. So far, even though entrepreneurs behind this enterprise claim their business is going to the dogs, city pooches have given the advent two enthusiastic paws up. Can lobby catnip machines be far behind?
