Are you tired of hearing the same old get ready for winter lecture? Be creative, think outside the box. Think of what you can do now and how you can "do it better" before the weather gets worse. Remember, no castle is perfect.

1. Is your house too hot, too cold or too drafty?
2. Do you have signs of mildew and mold?
3. Do your allergies give you more trouble inside your house than outdoors?
4. Are your utility bills too high?

Take a stroll through you local hardware store. Walk through the aisles and peruse the shelves. See exactly what's available in your area and what is specifically available to help you deal with your particular climate conditions.

As always, we invite you to check our website, but try your local utility website as well. Oh, and don't forget to contact your local building department. Such agencies offer free energy audits (home energy inspections). And don't forget the rest of the internet for energy saving tips, new and useful products and ideas.

By the way, we're a team. Let us know if you find something that works better then what you've been using. We would be most grateful.

Easy Fall Home Maintenance: Avoid Potential Problems

Leaf & Yard clean up is common on the Fall To Do list for most homeowners, but gutter cleaning remains one of the most dreaded items that is often pushed down the list. This results in expensive property damage for countless homeowners every year.

HOUSE PAINTING BASICS

Brought to you by The Wood Restoration Experts at

 Smith And Company

When we were boys, our father taught us that 80 percent of the work in just about any paint job is in the preparation. He also encouraged us both to take art classes. We did. But it didn't make any difference. Today, our wives insist on picking the paint colors.

The expertise is not just in the bottle - it also comes in the form of tips and advice to help homeowners avoid costly repair and replacement of their granite countertops and other natural stone surfaces.

"We created Granite Gold brand stone-care products a decade ago as a solution to the often- repeated question, 'What should I use to clean my stone?'," said Lenny Sciarrino, the Granite Gold Inc. co-founder and president/CEO who grew up in the Southern California family business manufacturing and installing natural stone surfaces. "As Granite Gold grew and customers became more aware of the expertise behind the products, answering their questions and readily sharing stone care tips and advice became a central part of Granite Gold. It's an old-school approach to customer service. We're experts in stone care, and we personally walk customers through the steps to care for their stone."

DO YOU HAVE UGLY CONCRETE?

Make the ordinary... extraordinary

Concrete stain is a fast, simple way to turn your dull gray patio into a lively, colorful surface that will make your outdoor space more inviting. The stain is nearly foolproof to apply - just wet the concrete and spray on the stain. If you're not happy with the result, you can go back and apply a second or third coat to enhance the color.

In this story, we'll show you how to apply the stain, including ideas for mixing stains to create a unique, multicolored surface that looks like marble. You'll save a substantial amount of money by doing it yourself, and you won't need any special tools - just basic painting tools and rain-free weather. If you're cutting kerfs into the concrete, you'll need a diamond masonry blade for your circular saw.
