Saving energy with zone heating

There is a lot of advertising for a variety of infrared heaters promising to save you 50% off your heating bill. In the wake of this advertising there are a number of skeptics, and more than a few blogs, refuting the savings. The basis for these savings is for the home owner to turn down their primary heating source and use zone heating to warm individual rooms. The EIA (Energy Information Administration) estimates that for every degree you lower the thermostat on your furnace, you’ll save 5% on your heating cost. Then, by using zone heating, you warm the areas of the home you are in; bedroom, den, office, basement, etc. When you trade the higher cost of heating the entire home for zone heating, there is a net cost savings. Customers who heat with propane or oil see the largest savings when they trade the cost for less expensive electricity, (about .10cents per Kwh) their net results can be significant.   Read more…
