With the holidays behind us, we can now focus on those much needed home repairs such as clogged gutters, a leaking roof, a dripping faucet or that gurgling water heater. You'll find tips on how to deal with all of these woes in this issue of On The House Express.

Dreaming about a new deck? Don't wait until Spring to begin planning. Check out our new signature THE CAREY BROTHERS 3D DECK AND LANDSCAPE SOFTWARE. It's an easy-to-use software tool that lets you plan, build and customize your deck in three dimensions before you buy a single board. Plus, design and garden expert Rebecca Cole offers up some tips on ringing in the new year with some "colorful" design ideas. She also shares some Winter "dos" that will keep your plants from being bitten by Jack Frost.

And, as always, take time to enjoy some culinary delights with recipes from our friend and yours, Dom DeLuise.  French onion soup is just one of the delectables Dom whips up for us this month. Yum, Yum!

Thanks again for listening to On The House with the Carey Bros., and best wishes for a wonderful 2007!

Winter Tips

Snow is great for skiing or for children to romp around in, but it can cause major problems in and around the home. Winter Garden Chores by Rebecca Cole

Though our gardens may look neglected in the winter they shouldn’t be. There are a few things we can do now to assure the full glory we long for in the summer. Begin with pruning. Winter can be an ideal time to prune trees, some shrubs and some perennials. Just be sure you know which ones to prune. Most non-fruit trees will be fine to prune now.   Read more...

I’m Dreaming of a Colorful Winter by Rebecca Cole

TWhen the green grass is a distant memory, the blue skies fade to a permanent grey and the bright yellow sun has let a distant cousin sit in for the winter…we long for a cure for ‘visual anemia’. Winter is the perfect time to infuse your home with a major shot of color. After all, bright colors always look better against a backdrop of dark, dull neutrals. Consider that magenta pink scarf against your charcoal grey wool coat, or the bright turquoise blue sweater set off perfectly with the dark chocolate trousers and brown turtleneck. So take advantage of this grey season to experiment with some bold colors inside your home. Paint one wall, maybe the entryway a heavenly blue or throw some bright orange pillows on that dull brown sofa or try a bright chartreuse green rug beneath that old dining room table and you may not need the vacation you’ve been craving after all. (Well, maybe it won’t work that well)   Read more...
