Spring has sprung! It's one of our favorite times of year. Off come the storm windows and in comes the fresh air. It's a great time for gardening and getting your home into shape after being cooped-up all winter.

Bathroom Ventilation

One of the most frequently misunderstood areas in homes today is the need for proper and adequate ventilation. Especially so in extreme high-humidity areas – such as in bathrooms. Equally misunderstood, is the need for (and role of) the mechanical exhaust system…more commonly referred to as: the bathroom fan.

Starting with the absolute “basics,” building codes require all habitable areas of homes to have windows (bedrooms, dining rooms and living rooms for example). However, in non-habitable areas (such as bathrooms) that are often centrally-located deep in the interior of one’s home, windows are not possible and codes allow natural ventilation (windows) to be replaced with mechanical forced-air fans – with certain “air-exchange” CFM (cubic-feet-per-minute) ratios specified based on room size.   Read more...
