Welcome to this edition of On The House Express! This month, we bring you details of our trip to Jacksonville, Florida - the home of Super Bowl XXXIX and Rebuilding Together's 10th Anniversary Kickoff to Rebuild Project. Rebuilding Together is the nation's largest volunteer organization preserving and revitalizing low-income houses, non-profits and communities.

Also, we give you a "behind-the-scenes" peek at our Diamond in the Desert -- A Remodeler's Remodel. Step through the remodel of a vintage 1980's two bedroom, two bathroom family vacation home in Palm Desert, California.

In this issue you will also learn how to avoid remodeling pitfalls, how to rid your home of unpleasant odors and how to save water.

Thanks for reading!

Diamond in the desert: A remodeler's remodel

We recently had the opportunity to strap on our tools and renovate a vintage early 1980s two-bedroom, two-bath family vacation home in Palm Desert, Calif. We thought that you might enjoy a "behind-the-scenes" look at the "remodelers remodel."   Read more...

Kickoff to Rebuild Project in Jacksonville, FL

Thanks to the sponsorship by On The House partner The Family Handyman, the Carey Bros. recently took part in Rebuilding Together's Annual "Kickoff To Rebuilding." In contrast to last year's project, which involved the rehab of several single family homes, this year's project involved the renovation of a fourty-plus year old Boys and Girls Club in downtown Jacksonville, Florida. James and Morris remote broadcast On The House live from the event at the F. Lee Memorial Boys and Girls Club that serves over 100 low income and underpriveledged young people in Jacksonville.  Read more...

Ridding Your Home of Unpleasant Odors

Few things are more embarrassing to a homemaker than unpleasant odors in the house. A foul-smelling garbage disposal or ripe garbage pail can make even the loveliest of homes uninviting.

Unpleasant odors often are associated with poor housekeeping. While this sometimes is the case, foul odors can invade even the tidiest of homes. Bacteria is a prime source of most household odors. Decomposing food, pet feces and dampness caused by poor ventilation are producers of odor-causing bacteria.   Read more...

Professor Flush Says it’s Time to Conserve Water

Only 1% of the world's entire water supply is available for human use -- the rest is salty or locked in icecaps and glaciers. This small 1% must satisfy the planet’s agricultural, manufacturing, community, household and sanitation needs. We actually drink very little (less than 2%) of our processed "drinking water"-- the rest goes on lawns, in washing machines, and down toilets and drains!

According to Fluidmaster, Inc, the world’s largest maker of toilet repair parts, a leaky toilet is one the most flagrant sources of water waste. They remind us that even well tuned toilets account for the single biggest use of household water (27% of daily water consumption per person in an average household). But when they’re not running efficiently, they’re guzzlers. In just one year, a leaky toilet can lose enough water to fill a swimming pool.   Read more...
